Although chronic pain is often caused by inflammation, some inflammation can actually be a good sign. Inflammation is a byproduct of your body’s natural healing mechanisms.

When you are injured or have an infection, your body’s immune system sends white blood cells to the affected areas to either repair the injury or fight the infection. The result is inflammation, which usually subsides once the issue has passed. However, when your immune system is not functioning properly, inflammation remains.

Dr. Fred Tabung, a researcher with the Department of Nutrition at Harvard, says, “…a poor diet can alter your immune system, so it acts abnormally and can contribute to persistent low-grade inflammation.”
